Ipswich Museum seeks World Art Consultants

Ipswich Museum is seeking consultants to ensure that Ipswich Museum’s important World Cultures Collections are better understood, documented and readily accessible to facilitate use in new displays and decolonisation programme. To contribute towards a smooth, well-documented programme of ‘decanting’ collections in advance of building works.

 

There are 6 packages of work 

Package 1.        Specialist Overview/ report on the World Cultures Collection as a whole

Package 2.        Improving storage and basic documentation – World Cultures collections from Oceania, Indian sub-continent, North America and elsewhere

Package 3.        Improving storage and basic documentation – African Collections

Package 4.        Collections documentation research

Package 5.        Further specific specialist collections advice

Package 6.        Participation in networks with source communities

 

Regarding package 6, participation in networks with source communities, it is the intention of Museum Staff that current contacts and work in the previous 5 packages will inform and connect us with the appropriate activity, in particular the consultant should include recommendations of projects and contacts that would be useful to the work they are outlining.

Ipswich Museum Decolonisation Consultant

				Ipswich Borough Council are currently out to tender for the provision of a Decolonisation Consultant for Ipswich Museum. This post and the work is to support the stage 2 application for funding from NHLF for the redevelopment of Ipswich Museum. This opportunity is available in the `Current Tenders` area of Suffolk Sourcing.Interested parties are invited to express their interest to gain full access to the tender documentation.  The deadline date for submissions of the tender is 1200hrs 16 June 2020. Please note late returns may NOT be permitted.

Freelance Opportunity: Buxton Museum

Buxton Museum and Art Gallery is looking for help to identify ethnographic material and for advice on potential restitutions.  They write:

These objects were purchased between 1940 and 1988, and were part of the Derbyshire Schools Library Service collections.

We are looking for people who can help identify objects from:

·         Plains Indian (around 33 objects)

·         First Nations (around 10 objects)

·         Inuit (around 72 objects)

The objects are located in Buxton, Derbyshire. You will need to travel to view the objects in person.

With the support of the Esmee Fairburn Collections Trust funding, we are able to offer a fee of £250 a day plus reasonable travel expenses. Due to budget constraints we can only offer a maximum of two days’ work on the material. 

The work needs to be carried out between mid February and March.

Freelance opportunity: Buxton Museum and Art Gallery

Buxton Museum and Art Gallery is looking for help to identify ethnographic material and for advice on potential restitutions.  These objects were purchased between 1940 and 1988,  and were subsequently part of the Derbyshire Schools Library Service collections.

South London Gallery - Researcher in Residence.

The SLG is seeking an engaging and energetic Researcher-in-Residence to work closely with the Art Assassins, the SLG’s youth forum, to explore, unpick and make accessible the archive of materials collected by government anthropologist Northcote W Thomas in Nigeria and Sierra Leone from 1909–1915.

Taking the lead from the Art Assassins, you will explore the relevance of this incredible archive for young people today and help them produce work in response to the material for an exhibition in the SLG’s Fire Station annexe. Working with a number of different artists and SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies), this role will bridge the gap between complex ideas and academic information and a group of young people who are keen to interrogate their own histories.

As well as working alongside the Art Assassins, the Researcher-in-Residence produces a written paper. This will form the basis of an accessible resource exploring the archive and its significance for the Art Assassins, as well as for the SLG’s audiences and the wider community.

The Researcher-in-Residence will be an experienced and critical researcher with a specialist interest in colonial era archives, diasporic experience and the decolonisation of education and history. At the core of this position is a desire to engage a non-academic public with research methodologies and critical thinking.

We are particularly interested in applicants from low-income backgrounds and those from black and ethnic minority communities, who are under-represented in museums and galleries.

The Researcher-in-Residence is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
