JME Deputy Editor Job Description

 JOB TITLE: Deputy Editor: Journal of Museum Ethnography  

REPORTS TO: Editor of the Journal of Museum Ethnography

£1300 per annum. 

Job Purpose 

To provide editorial support for the academic journal Journal of Museum Ethnography, working closely with the Editor to edit articles and formatting the journal within an established house style and format ready for printing

Main Responsibilities

  • Formatting and proofreading articles before they are sent to the publisher, and checking the final publisher proof 

  • Suggesting articles to commission.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience  

Education, Qualifications and Training 

Essential:  

  • Vocational qualifications (N/SVQ 2/3, ONC or equivalent) OR School education to Standard Grade or equivalent

Desirable: 

  • An undergraduate degree in Anthropology, Museum Studies, Archaeology or a relevant Area Studies.

Knowledge and Experience 

Essential: 

  • Experience of dealing with a large cross section of people, particularly scholars 
  • Competent communication and interpersonal skills 
  • Competent IT and general keyboard skills 
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office packages, especially Word and Excel 
  • Excellent standard of written and spoken English 
  • Good numeracy skills 
  • Ability to work within and meet deadlines 

Desirable:  

  • Academic knowledge in the fields of Anthropology, Museum Studies, Archaeology or a relevant Area Studies. 
  • Previous experience with academic publishing

JME Editor Job Description

JOB TITLE: Editor: Journal of Museum Ethnography  

REPORTS TO: Chair of the Museum Ethnographers Group  

To provide editorial duties for the academic journal Journal of Museum Ethnography, working closely with the editorial team in the day-to-day administration of the journal, including commissioning and editing articles and managing workflow for the journal.  

Main Responsibilities:  

·                     Manage the administration of publications workflow for the journal. This includes: commissioning article and managing submissions, editing and proofreading articles and managing timescales for journal publication processes 

·                     Managing the email inbox, responding to queries directly or forwarding queries as appropriate. 

·                     Formatting and proofreading articles before they are sent to the publisher, liaising with authors over production issues and checking the final publisher proof  

·                     Liaising with the MEG committee to provide quarterly and annual reporting as required and attending 4 meetings a year plus the annual conference. 

·                     Other general administrative assistance as required, for instance: liaising with the editorial team, the printer and JSTOR, ensuring that electronic filing is kept up to date.

Committee Role: Secretary

Annually 

  • Ensure that annual report and accounts are submitted to the Charity Commission. 

  • Ensure that the Charity Commission has up-to-date details including Trustee contact list. 

  • Keep track of terms of office, advertise committee vacancies, take nominations. 

  • Prepare AGM agenda and circulate to members in advance (via email/website). 

  • Prepare and circulate up-to-date committee list. 

  • Ensure that new committee members read constitution / sign declaration.

Quarterly 

  • Confirm meeting venue and date, circulate agenda. 

  • Take minutes of meetings and circulate. 

  • Keep minute-book up-to-date and keep essential documents (e.g. Constitution) on file.

Occasionally 

  • Submit minute-books/documents to MEG archive. 

  • Collate material from other committee members and forward to MEG archive. 

  • Keep constitution updated and ensure Charity Commission is informed of amendment. 

  • Deal with general correspondence and forward as appropriate.
