The World Art section, at Brighton Museum & Art Gallery
is looking for collections specialists to assist with a Collections Review of
its African holdings. In conducting the Review we are following an established
methodology (see the report What’s in Store, Collections review in the North West, Renaissance North West)
We are looking for specialists to provide an expert
‘curatorial’ opinion on areas of the collection. Commissioned specialists will
be asked to examine object lists and images in advance, spend up to one day
viewing selected objects on site and produce a short report. The timescale for
this work and for the site visit is mid-February to the end of June 2016.
We can offer a fee to specialists undertaking this work on
a freelance basis (only) and can offer travel and subsistence expenses to those
who may wish to participate as part of their existing role within a cultural
institution.
The review work has been split into broad geographic
regions and we have already worked with three specialists who have examined our
West African, South African, East African and metalwork collections. We are now
looking for more specialists to assist us who have a particular interest and
knowledge in the following areas:
North Africa including material from Morocco and Algeria and a small
amount from Libya and Tunisia (78 objects in total).
Central Africa including material from the Congo region and a small amount
from Zaire and Gabon (202 objects in total).
Southern Africa including material from Botswana, Zimbabwe and Malawi with
a small amount of material from Angola and Mozambique (390 objects in total).
To find out more about this
opportunity please contact Rachel Heminway Hurst, Curator of World Art,
